Ashley’s boyfriend became violent once they discovered she was pregnant. At first, it was sporadic, but it escalated quickly; her life was in danger. Ashley and her young daughter found safety at My Sisters’ Place. Ashley was determined to create a new life for herself, her daughter, and her baby. Domestic Violence Facts

There are many different types of domestic violence.

Financial abuse occurs when a person is denied access to or prevented from making money, or their money is controlled by someone else.

Physical abuse includes hitting, slapping, shoving, strangulation, biting or other physical harm.

Sexual abuse involves forcing or coercing a person into unwanted sexual conduct or exposure.

Emotional abuse can include name-calling, unnecessary criticism and manipulation that toys with a person’s self-esteem.

Psychological abuse entails the use of fear, intimidation and isolation from friends and family members. A common tactic abusers undertake is to “gaslight” victims, so they question their sanity.
